Madrid : Nightlife
Especially around Puerta del Sol, you'll find a high concentration of everything relating to food, drinking, entertainment and staying away from your hotels as long as possible. Madrid is also noted for its nightlife and discotheques. It's not uncommon for madrileños to dance all night, head to the Chocolateria San Ginés for chocolatey churros at dawn, go home, shower, shave, and go to work. This nightlife, called la movida and initially focussed on the Plaza del Dos de Mayo, flourished after the death of Franco, especially during the 80's while Madrid's most cherished mayor Enrique Tierno Galván was in office. A particular hub for this night activity is nowadays the nearby gay village of Chueca. Alonso Martinez and Bilbao are the names of two subway stations, both of them are in very lively areas of Madrid.
Local from Alonso Martinez you will find popular bars and restaurants and close to Bilbao you will come across the famous discoteque, Pacha. The bars in the districts of Arguelles and Moncloa are generally frequented by University students and a younger crowd. Malasaña, in the vicinity of the Plaza de Dos de Mayo, has countless cafés and bars with live music, in addition to moderately-priced restaurants.
